As you probably know, healthcare is among the fastest growing fields in the USA, and more and more options are offered both online and on campus to obtain the training that you need. But just where do you begin? Many aspiring students start by looking for colleges that are within driving distance of their residences and then comparing tuition. Or they may surf the internet looking for online courses and go with the least expensive one. But while cost and location are important issues when making your determination, they should not be the only ones when comparing medical billing and coding schools. Such qualifiers as reputation and accreditation must be considered also. We will go over a checklist of topics that you need to ask the schools you are evaluating so that you can learn what you must know prior to making your selection. Before we do that, let’s take a look at what medical coders and billers do and the academic and certification options available.

Medical Coding Job Description

Medical coders work on the front line of the billing systems for Bellflower IL medical practices and healthcare organizations. Coders have the responsibility to examine the medical records of patients and convert all services provided into universal codes. These services can be for diagnosis, medical or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies used. There are multiple codes that are used in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders use information from sources including nursing and physician notes, patient charts, and lab and radiology reports. Coders must not only know what services were provided in total for accuracy, but must have a working knowledge of all private payer and government rules that influence coding also. Inaccurately coded claims may result in services not being paid for, services being paid at a reduced rate, or the provider being penalized for improper or fraudulent billing. Since improper coding can actually cost Bellflower IL doctors and hospitals multiple thousands of dollars in income every year, a reliable medical coder is an important asset to the healthcare organization. They can operate in every kind of healthcare facility, including family practices, hospitals, clinics and critical care centers. It is not uncommon for professional medical coders to work at home as an offsite employee or an independent contractor.

Medical Billing Job Description

Bellflower IL medical billers collect revenueAs crucial as the medical coder’s function is, it would be for naught without the contribution of the medical biller whose labors generate revenue. Medical billing clerks are very important to Bellflower IL medical facilities and are literally responsible for keeping their doors open. Sometimes the coder and biller are the same individual within a healthcare organization, but they can also be two independent specialists. Once the coder has performed his or her task, the biller uses the codes supplied to complete and submit claim forms to insurance carriers, Medicaid or Medicare. After they have been adjusted by the appropriate organization, patients can then be billed for deductibles or additional out of pocket expenses. On a regular basis, a medical billing professional may also do any of the following:

  • Confirm medical insurance benefits for patients and help them with billing concerns or questions
  • Follow up on patient claims submitted and appeal any that have been denied
  • Function as an intermediate between the healthcare provider, the insurance companies and the patients for proper claim settlement
  • Create and oversee Accounts Receivables reports
  • Generate and deal with unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billing clerks not only work for family practices, but also Bellflower IL emergency care facilities, hospitals, medical groups or nursing homes. They can practice in any type of healthcare facility that relies on the revenues generated from billing third party payers and patients.

Bellflower IL patients are billed for medical treatmentIt’s imperative that you receive your training from a reputable school, whether it’s a trade school, vocational school or community college. Even though it is not required in most cases to attain a professional certification, the program you choose should be accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). Most colleges only require that you have either a high school diploma or a GED to qualify. The most expedient way to becoming either a medical coder or biller (or both) is to attain a certificate, which normally takes about one year to finish. An Associate Degree is also an option for a more expansive education, which for almost all colleges calls for 2 years of studies. Bachelor’s Degrees for medical coding and billing are not widely offered. After your education has been completed, although not mandated in the majority of states, you may desire to attain a professional certification. Certification is a great means for those new to the field to show potential employers that they are not only qualified but dedicated to their occupation. Some of the organizations that offer certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).
  • The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS).
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Just make sure to verify that any online classes you are researching is accredited by one of the national accrediting organizations, for instance the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Things to Ask Online Medical Biller and Coder Courses

Now that you have a better idea what a medical coder and biller does, along with what training options are available, you must begin the process of comparing schools. But since there many training options offered at community colleges and technical, trade and vocational schools online and within the Bellflower IL area, you should have a ready list of questions to analyze each one. And when you include all of the online schools that offer medical coding and billing classes, the task can become rather formidable. As we have already discussed, cost and location are going to be significant issues, especially if you have a modest budget and will be traveling to classes from your Bellflower residence. And verifying that the school and program are accredited must be part of your vetting procedure also. So let’s take a look at some of the other questions that you should ask the colleges you are reviewing so that you can compare each one and make the appropriate choice.

Is the Online College Accredited? It’s essential that the school and program you decide on are accredited by a highly regarded accrediting agency, for instance the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online program, it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. Not only will accreditation help ensure that the education you get will be of the highest quality, it could help with your future employment in Bellflower IL also. A number of Bellflower healthcare facilities will only employ entry level prospects that have completed an accredited medical billing and coding training program. And financial aid and student loans are in many cases only offered for schools that have earned an accreditation.

What is the Online College’s Reputation? Before choosing a medical billing and coding program, check out what its ranking and reputation are compared to other schools. This is especially relevant if you have no experience in the industry, since potential employers will basically be evaluating you based on the quality of your training. As we have discussed, making sure that the program is accredited is a first step. Checking with college rating organizations, such as U.S. News and World Report, can validate the quality of the school also. An alternative is to get in touch with a few Bellflower IL healthcare organizations that you may have an interest in working for and find out which colleges they suggest. Keep in mind that even if the college itself does not have an excellent reputation, its medical billing and coding program may still be highly regarded.

Is there an Employment Placement Program? Finding employment after graduation in your new profession may be challenging without the help of a job placement program. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have job placement programs in the Bellflower IL area and what their job placement rates are. A rapid and high placement rate is a good indication that the coding and billing school has a considerable network of medical care employers where they can refer their graduates. It also suggests that the school’s graduates are in high demand in the marketplace.

Where is the School Located ? If you are anticipating commuting to class from your Bellflower IL home, then the location of the college will be of prime importance. Of course if you enroll in an online medical billing and coding program, then the location of the college will not be a factor. One thing to keep in mind is that if you go to classes at a community or junior college, many require a higher tuition for students that reside outside of their districts. So you may want to first look at those colleges that are within your local area.

What is the Complete Cost? Medical coding and billing training programs can vary in cost based on the type of credential acquired and the amount of training provided. But remember, tuition is not the only cost of your education. Expenses also consist of such items as the cost of supplies, books and commuting. Financial assistance might be available to help offset some of the cost, so don’t forget to check with the college’s financial assistance department to see what is available in 61724. Naturally if you decide to attend an online college, some of these additional costs, particularly for commuting may be reduced or even eliminated.

Are Classes Accessible that Match your Schedule? A number of students continue working while attending college and need a flexible class schedule. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Bellflower IL, verify that they are available at those times. If you can only attend on a part time schedule, verify that the college you pick offers that option. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up classes missed due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Attending Online Billing and Coding Classes in Bellflower Illinois?

If you live in the greater Bellflower IL area and will be attending Online Medical Billing and Coding Classes from home, the following information may be both interesting and informative about your local stomping grounds.

Bellflower, Illinois

Bellflower was laid out on 26 August 1871 by George Nelson Black (15 March 1833 – 22 April 1908) and his wife Louisa J. Black (22 December 1840 – 23 December 1909). George was born in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, and had come to Springfield, Illinois in 1850 where he became wealthy through manufacturing, mining, and railroads.[5] Bellflower Township had subscribed $30,000 in twenty-year bonds toward the construction of what was then called the Gilman, Clinton and Springfield Railroad. A condition of the funding was that the township would have a station on the railroad. Black purchased 100 acres (0.40 km2) of land, laid 40 acres (160,000 m2) out into town lots and then transferred the title to the Railroad. When the railroad became property of the Illinois Central Railroad, town lots in Bellflower were not transferred to that railroad. The name of the town came from the name of the township and was selected by Jesse Richards, who was particularly fond of the Bellflower apple. It is perhaps the only town in Illinois named for an apple. In the 1870s it was often spelled Belle Flower or Belle-Flower.[6]

The original plan of the town consisted of two square blocks of land. Most of the western square was divided into sixteen blocks, each usually containing twelve lots, and this part of the town was split diagonally by the 100-foot-wide (30 m) path of the railroad. Unlike many towns found in the 1870s, there was no Depot Ground. The eastern square of land and a strip along the north edge of the western square was divided into out lots, each of which were several times the size the lots in the western square. The combination of in lots and out lots was fairly common in central Illinois and may be found, for example, at Hudson and Chenoa. The small triangle of landcut off by the railroad from the remainder of block ten became thelocation of the town jail. The station was located on the south side of the tracks and the two early elevatorswere on railroad land. By 1895 both in lots and out lots held residences.[7] R. E. Moreland established the first business. Bellflower quickly became a major grain shipping center serving the fertile surrounding land. By 1879 it was shipping over 350,000 bushels of grain a year.[8] In 1900 the population was 356 and it is only slightly larger today.

As of the census[9] of 2000, there were 408 people, 162 households, and 117 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,118.1 people per square mile (437.6/km²). There were 171 housing units at an average density of 468.6 per square mile (183.4/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 100.00% White.
